LEARNING OBJECT REPOSITORY (L.O.R)

A Learning Object Repository (L.O.R) is a website that store instructional digital resources or learning objects. As a teacher you can go this website , download these resources and use them to build online learning opportunities for your students. Unlike  a library , where you just borrow items created bu others , a Learning Object Repository allows you to also upload the learning objects that you are created so that other can use them. And learning objects that reside on a Learning Object Repository have been examined and evaluated for their quality and appropriateness. The most effective L.O.R's are not simply storage facilities. They also provide rich opportunities for you to share ideas. By having a place where users can post comments on each item in the collection , engage in an exchange of ideas with other members and participate in rating objects , participants become part of a community of practice . Another important rationale for L.O.R is to reduce duplication of work.

What is stored in Learning Repository?

A learning object repository (LOR) is a general term for an online collection of learning objects. A learning object is an object or collection of objects that assists in the learning process (e.g., a topic, a module, a course, a quiz etc).
A course is a collection of modules, and a module is a collection of modules and topics. Topics have no children and cannot be descendants of a course. Topics are simple file associations (e.g., a PowerPoint file, an HTML file, a multimedia file, a URL, etc).

Learning Repository connects to Learning Environment through the following:
  • The Files area enables you to search, publish, and retrieve objects.
  • The Content tool enables you to search, publish, and retrieve objects.
  • The Course Builder tool enables you to search and retrieve objects.
  • The Course Management tool enables you to search and retrieve objects as part of the last step in creating a new course offering.
  • The Import/Export/Copy Course Components page enables you to search and retrieve objects as part of the last step in creating a new course offering.
  • The LOR widget enables you to search, browse, or publish from a Course Home or My Home.
